China gets a lot of flack for its overzealous urban development, and rightfully so. If you live in a Changzhou apartment building, odds are you can look out your window and see the hulking shadows of cranes, erecting yet another fabric-wrapped behemoth on the horizon. Construction is everywhere, which is why it’s so refreshing to run into the old when wandering around the city. Not an insignificant number of traditional courtyard houses have miraculously weathered a tumultuous century and urban gold rush, bearing witness among their glass and cement neighbors. GOLDEN EAGLE OCEAN WORLD – 金鹰海洋世界
Up until this year, Changzhou didn’t have an aquarium. Now it does. Golden Eagle Ocean World, a private joint venture between domestic shopping mall developer Golden Eagle Retail Group and the Korean COEX Aquarium, is so new it’s still in pristine shape. Highlights include penguins, harbor seals, horseshoe crabs, giant sea turtles, some impressively large tanks, and an underwater tunnel.
